Gerry Degaute

Pension Trusteeship

Gerry acts as chair of trustees, independent trustee and sole trustee for a number of our schemes, which vary in size and include both DB and DC benefits.

Before joining Law Debenture, Gerry was the Chief Executive of Royal Mail Pensions Trustees Limited. Whilst at Royal Mail Gerry served as chair, trustee and committee member on all its pension schemes.

Particular expertise

  • Investment strategies – LDI programmes, derisking strategies, hedge funds, structured debt, high yield, futures, gearing and collateral management, defined contribution lifestyling
  • Funding strategies – deficit recovery plans, property backed contributions, liaising and transacting with the Government at all levels, managing relationship with the Pensions Regulator and managing regulated apportionment arrangements
  • Other – auto enrolment, benefit restructuring, employer covenant review, member communications, stakeholder relationship management, trustee training, adviser selection

Background

Gerry is a pensions professional having started his career at Sun Life Assurance, then moved to Massey Ferguson. He joined Royal Mail Pensions Trustees Limited in 1987 where he became Chief Executive in 2002. He stepped down at the end of May 2013 having successfully completed the £30billion plus transfer of liabilities and assets to Government.

He is currently a Vice President of the Pensions Management Institute, chairs its Audit and Risk Committee and sits on the Trustee Group Committee. He served on the Investment Council of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association from 2003-2011. He has also chaired the Pension Fund Investment Forum.
