Michael manages our pensions practice and represents Law Debenture on more than a dozen schemes whose assets range in size from £5 million to £8 billion – including final salary, career average and defined contribution arrangements. He is chairman of four of these and acts as sole trustee for two others. He joined the firm in 2010.
- Investment strategies – including hedging, liability management exercises, de-risking strategies centred around flight paths, buy-in and buy-out projects and the design of DC investment strategies.
- Adviser selection – oversight of selection panels for investment managers, other advisers and service providers.
- Negotiation and change management – funding negotiations and restructuring of sponsor finance and security arrangements – as well as changes to scheme structures (closure to future accruals and the like).
Michael has over 25 years’ professional services experience working with pension schemes. During that time he has acted as trustee, scheme actuary, corporate adviser, client relationship manager and chief executive. He has an MA in Physics from Oxford University.
He trained as an actuary with Bacon & Woodrow (now part of Aon Hewitt) and subsequently became a partner and scheme actuary with IS Cartwright & Co. He then worked with Arthur Andersen – helping to establish their actuarial practice. Michael led the UK business for Black Mountain – delivering outsourced employee benefit services to global clients; went on to set up subsidiaries in Europe and across the Asia Pacific region; and ultimately was the Chief Executive in New York. Before joining Law Debenture he headed the settlement business of Watson Wyatt (now Towers Watson).
Michael co-ordinates the production of Law Debenture’s Essentials documents and is a member of the SPP Advisory Council.
