Pension Trusteeship

Robert joined Law Debenture in 2017. He continues to chair the pension scheme of his former employer, Xerox, and has worked on pensions matters from both the employer and trustee perspective since the late 1990s. 

Not afraid to challenge the status quo, he seeks to build consensus, develop excellence in teams and ensure robust solutions are implemented.

Particular Expertise

  • Trustee effectiveness – building strong sponsor relationships, negotiating valuations/recovery plans, developing effective board and committee structures, aligning strong advisor teams, promoting effective communications
  • Corporate and scheme events – dealing with the impacts of corporate mergers and demergers, scheme mergers, scheme closure and cessation of future accrual
  • Investment – served on investment committees covering a wide range of issues from strategy development through to manager selection and monitoring; implementation of liability driven investment
  • Risk management – developing risk assessment process; de-risking and hedging strategies, covenant assessment

Background

Robert trained as a chartered accountant with Arthur Andersen, specialising in tax, before moving in-house.  He has worked with two major multinational companies in roles including tax, treasury, company secretarial, pensions and benefits, and corporate finance and has been involved with significant corporate events.

As well as chairing Trustee boards dealing with defined benefit and defined contribution schemes, his pension committee experience includes Investment, Governance, Covenant & Funding and Sponsor Relationship.

He also previously chaired the International Chamber of Commerce’s UK Tax Committee and sat on its Council.  He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and holds the Pension Management Institute’s certificate in pension trusteeship.
