Law Debenture part of working group that publishes medically underwritten bulk annuity guide
13 June 2016
A working group of pension specialists including Michael Chatterton from LawDeb Pension Trustees recently published an impartial guide to help trustees and other professionals understand the use of medical underwriting in bulk de-risking solutions for defined benefit pension schemes.
The working group, chaired by Margaret Snowdon of JLT Employee Benefits, also included pension specialists representing insurers, legal advisers and data collection specialists.
A number of LawDeb’s clients have successfully concluded buy-ins using medical underwriting information obtained from individual members – and Michael was able to bring this practical experience to the working party in the development of the guide.
In a recent medically underwritten buy-in by one of LawDeb’s clients, the scheme’s trustees worked with professional advisers to complete a deal that allowed the scheme’s liabilities to be insured without requiring additional funding from the employer.
At the conclusion of the deal Michael Chatterton stated that:
it was good that we were able to use medical underwriting to de-risk and that the experience of LawDeb Pension Trustees could be used to help complete this deal. It enhanced the security of members, strengthened the funding of the scheme and mitigated cost for the sponsoring company
